Trip to Agriculture University on 26 May 2017
On 26th of May 2017, the students of class X of Springdale High School attended a conference on GM crops. This conference was organised by the DBT (Department of Bio-Technology) centre of Assam Agricultural University and was based on whether it is good to consume Genetically Modifies Crops.
Apart from our school Army School, Arps, DCB College, Donbosco School and a few more schools and college attended this conference. Dr. Bidyut Sharma hosted the conference for all the students. He explained about many topics related to GM crops and what actually GM crops are. The students got to know about the usefulness of GM crops. They also got to know about the roles of GM crops in reducing Global warming as it reduced 28 million of carbon dioxide from the environment in 2014. The GM crops reduces the use pesticides by 20% in the agriculture.
Now the question that arises is whether the GM Crops have been accepted globally? Are GMD/GE crops safe to the environment? The answers to both the questions are ‘Yes’. As per ISAAA research, it is proved that the GM Crops have been accepted in the maximum parts of the world. In India, BT cotton is produced more than any other GM Crops. 18 million farmers are growing GMD, 28 countries are growing GMDs and 70 countries are eating GM Crops. This GM Crops are absolutely safe and healthy for humans. The nutritious value of GM crops are Vitamin – A.
The usefulness and future benefits of GMD cannot be defined in mere words but its importance needs to be felt by common man so that every human being can consume healthy and pesticide free food. Overall, as a conclusion, we could say that this trip had been full of knowledge and fun.
Mr. Dheeman Sarkar Academic Head and Mrs. Samima Z. Ahmed, Senior teacher along with 50 students from class X attended the session.
